Why Use Our Free Household Calculators?
Estimate Household Running Costs
Many household appliances use electricity every day, but their running costs are not always obvious.
Our energy calculators can help you estimate how much electricity an appliance uses and what that might cost at your chosen electricity rate.
This can be useful for comparing appliances or exploring changes in household usage.
Plan Home Improvements More Accurately
Decorating and DIY projects often require measurements and material estimates.
Our calculators can help you work out how much paint, wallpaper, flooring or tiling you may need before visiting a supplier.
Compare Different Options
A calculator allows you to change the inputs and see how the estimated results change.
For example, you can compare the running cost of an appliance used for one hour against the same appliance used for three hours.
You can also compare the paint required for one coat versus two coats.
Use UK-Friendly Measurements
Our household calculators are designed with UK users in mind.
Depending on the calculator, measurements and costs may include:
- Pounds sterling (£).
- Pence per kilowatt-hour (p/kWh).
- Kilowatt-hours (kWh).
- Metres and centimetres.
- Square metres (m²).
- Square feet (ft²).
- Litres and millilitres.
- Watts and kilowatts.

How to Calculate Appliance Running Costs in the UK
One of the most useful household calculations is estimating electricity consumption.
Electricity is generally charged according to the number of kilowatt-hours used, together with any applicable standing charge.
The basic appliance electricity calculation is:
Electricity Used (kWh) = Power (Watts) ÷ 1,000 × Hours Used
To estimate the energy cost:
Electricity Cost = kWh Used × Electricity Unit Rate
Example: Running a 2,000-Watt Electric Heater
Suppose an electric heater uses 2,000 watts and runs at full power for two hours.
2,000 ÷ 1,000 × 2 = 4 kWh
If the electricity unit rate is an illustrative 25p per kWh:
4 × £0.25 = £1.00
The estimated energy cost would be £1.00 for that usage.
This example excludes standing charges and assumes the heater draws its full rated power continuously. Thermostatic controls and actual consumption can change the result.

How to Calculate the Amount of Paint Needed for a Room
Estimating paint quantities begins with the surface area.
For a simple rectangular room, the total wall area can be estimated using:
Wall Area = 2 × (Room Length + Room Width) × Wall Height
You can then subtract the areas of doors and windows, multiply by the number of coats and divide by the paint’s stated coverage per litre.
Example
Suppose a room measures:
- Length: 4 metres.
- Width: 3 metres.
- Height: 2.4 metres.
Total wall area:
2 × (4 + 3) × 2.4 = 33.6 m²
If the paint covers 12 m² per litre and you plan two coats:
33.6 × 2 ÷ 12 = 5.6 litres
This is before deducting doors and windows or allowing for variations in surface absorbency and paint application.

How to Calculate Flooring in Square Metres
For a rectangular room, multiply the length by the width.
Floor Area (m²) = Length (m) × Width (m)
For example, a room measuring 5 metres by 4 metres has a floor area of:
5 × 4 = 20 m²
Additional material may be needed for cutting and waste.
The appropriate allowance depends on the flooring material, room shape and installation pattern.
Our Flooring Calculator helps you estimate quantities using your measurements.

Frequently Asked Questions About Household Calculators
Are Calculator Central’s household calculators free?
Yes. Our Home & Household Calculators are free to use, without registration or subscription.
Can I calculate household appliance running costs in pounds?
Yes. Our electricity cost calculators are designed for UK users and allow calculations using electricity unit rates in pence per kilowatt-hour, with estimated costs displayed in pounds.
How accurate are household running cost calculators?
Accuracy depends on the information entered and the calculation method. Appliance power ratings, actual electricity use, tariffs and operating conditions can all affect the result.
Can I use the Paint Calculator for any room?
The Paint Calculator is intended for common decorating projects. Irregularly shaped rooms, textured surfaces and specialist coatings may require additional measurements or allowances.
What is the easiest way to calculate a room’s area?
For a rectangular room, measure the length and width in metres and multiply them together. The result is the area in square metres.
Do flooring calculators include wastage?
Flooring estimates can include a waste allowance, but the appropriate percentage depends on the material, room shape and installation method.
Can I use these calculators on my mobile phone?
Our calculators are designed to be accessible on desktop computers, tablets and mobile phones.
Are the results guaranteed to be exact?
No. The calculators provide estimates based on the information entered. Always check product packaging, supplier guidance and actual prices before making purchases.
