Standard BMI healthy-weight range
Calculated using a BMI of 18.5 to just below 25. This is a statistical reference range, not a personalised weight target.Standard Adult BMI Categories
| BMI | Category |
|---|---|
| Below 18.5 | Underweight |
| 18.5 to 24.9 | Healthy weight |
| 25 to 29.9 | Overweight |
| 30 and above | Obesity range |
BMI thresholds are interpreted differently for some ethnic backgrounds. BMI does not measure body fat directly or account for muscle mass and body composition.

What Is BMI?
BMI stands for Body Mass Index. It is a measurement that compares your weight with your height to provide a general indication of weight status.
BMI is widely used in healthcare and population research because it is simple to calculate and can help identify people who may benefit from further health assessment.
However, BMI does not directly measure body fat, muscle mass or where fat is stored in the body.
This means that two people with the same BMI may have different body compositions and health risks.
BMI should therefore be considered alongside other information, such as waist measurements, medical history and general health.
How to Use Our BMI Calculator UK
Our free BMI Calculator UK is designed to be straightforward.

For example, you might enter 170 cm or 5 feet 7 inches.
Step 3: Enter Your Weight
For example, you might enter 70 kg or 11 stone.
Step 4: Calculate Your BMI
Click Calculate My BMI.
The BMI calculator UK will display your BMI score, its standard adult category and a reference weight range for your height.
How Is BMI Calculated?
BMI is calculated by dividing your weight in kilograms by the square of your height in metres.
The formula is:
BMI = Weight (kg) ÷ Height (m)²
Example: Calculating BMI for Someone Weighing 70 kg
Suppose an adult weighs 70 kg and is 1.70 metres tall.
First, multiply the height by itself:
1.70 × 1.70 = 2.89
Then divide the weight by this figure:
70 ÷ 2.89 = 24.22
The person’s BMI is approximately 24.2.
This falls within the standard adult healthy-weight BMI range.
Our calculator performs these calculations automatically.
Adult BMI Chart UK
The following table shows the standard BMI classifications commonly used for adults.
| BMI Score | Standard Category |
|---|---|
| Below 18.5 | Underweight |
| 18.5 to 24.9 | Healthy weight |
| 25 to 29.9 | Overweight |
| 30 to 34.9 | Obesity class 1 |
| 35 to 39.9 | Obesity class 2 |
| 40 or above | Obesity class 3 |
These categories are general reference ranges. Different BMI thresholds are used for certain ethnic backgrounds because health risks can occur at lower BMI values.
What Is a Healthy BMI for Adults?
For many adults, the standard healthy BMI range is 18.5 to 24.9.
However, a BMI within this range does not automatically mean someone is healthy, just as a BMI outside it does not provide a diagnosis.
BMI cannot distinguish between muscle and fat, and it does not measure fat distribution.
Your age, ethnic background, medical conditions and other individual factors can affect how your BMI should be interpreted.
What Is a Healthy Weight for My Height?
The calculator can estimate the weight range corresponding to a standard BMI of 18.5 to just below 25 for your height.
For example, someone who is 170 cm tall has a standard BMI reference weight range of approximately 53.5 kg to below 72.3 kg.
This is calculated using:
Weight = BMI × Height (m)²
The result is a mathematical reference range rather than a personalised target.
A healthcare professional can help determine whether a particular weight is appropriate for your individual circumstances.
BMI Calculator UK in Stone and Pounds
Many people in the UK prefer to measure their weight in stone and pounds rather than kilograms.
Our BMI Calculator UK supports both measurement systems.
You can enter your height in feet and inches and your weight in stone and pounds without manually converting them into metric units.
The BMI calculator UK converts your measurements internally before applying the standard BMI formula.
Is BMI Different for Men and Women?
The standard adult BMI formula is the same for men and women.
It uses height and weight rather than sex.
However, body composition can differ between individuals, and BMI does not account for those differences.
For this reason, BMI should be interpreted as a general screening measure rather than a complete assessment of health.
Does Age Affect BMI?
Age can affect how useful BMI is as a measure of health.
For adults aged 65 and over, BMI should be interpreted with particular care because factors such as muscle loss, frailty and existing health conditions can influence the significance of a result.
Children and teenagers require different BMI assessment methods based on their age and sex.
Our calculator is designed for adults aged 18 and over and should not be used to assess children.
BMI and Ethnic Background
BMI related health risks can occur at lower BMI values for people from certain ethnic backgrounds.
UK guidance recommends lower thresholds for people from South Asian, Chinese, other Asian, Middle Eastern, Black African and African-Caribbean backgrounds.
For these groups:
A BMI of 23 to 27.4 is classified as overweight.
A BMI of 27.5 or above is classified within the obesity range.
The standard BMI categories displayed by our calculator do not automatically adjust for ethnic background.
For a more personalised interpretation, consider using the NHS BMI Calculator or speaking with a healthcare professional.
Is BMI an Accurate Measure of Health?
BMI can be a useful screening tool, but it has limitations.
BMI Does Not Distinguish Between Fat and Muscle
People with high muscle mass may have a higher BMI even when they have relatively low body fat.
BMI Does Not Measure Waist Fat
BMI cannot determine how much fat is carried around the abdomen.
Waist measurements can provide useful additional information about certain health risks.
BMI May Be Less Useful for Older Adults
Changes in muscle mass and body composition can affect how BMI should be interpreted in older people.
BMI Is Not Suitable for Everyone
The standard adult BMI calculator should not be used during pregnancy, for children, or by people with certain conditions affecting height or weight interpretation.
People with an eating disorder, or who suspect they may have one, should seek appropriate professional advice rather than rely on this tool.
BMI vs Waist-to-Height Ratio
BMI compares weight with height, while waist-to-height ratio compares waist circumference with height.
Both measurements can provide useful information, but they assess different things.
Waist-to-height ratio helps estimate abdominal fat distribution, which BMI does not measure directly.
For adults with a BMI below 35, NICE recommends considering waist-to-height ratio alongside BMI when assessing certain weight-related health risks.
Our Waist-to-Height Ratio Calculator can help you work out this additional measurement.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does BMI stand for?
BMI stands for Body Mass Index. It is calculated using weight and height to provide a general screening measure of weight status.
What is a normal BMI in the UK?
For many adults, the standard healthy BMI range is 18.5 to 24.9. Different thresholds may apply to some ethnic backgrounds.
How do I calculate BMI using stone and pounds?
Enter your height in feet and inches and your weight in stone and pounds into our calculator. It converts the measurements and calculates your BMI automatically.
Is a BMI of 25 overweight?
Under standard adult BMI classifications, a BMI of 25 is at the beginning of the overweight range. However, BMI alone cannot determine an individual’s health status.
Is a BMI of 30 considered obese?
A BMI of 30 falls within the standard adult obesity range. A healthcare professional can interpret this measurement alongside other relevant health information.
Can BMI be inaccurate for muscular people?
Yes. BMI does not distinguish between muscle and fat, so highly muscular individuals may have a high BMI without having a correspondingly high body-fat percentage.
Can I use this BMI Calculator during pregnancy?
No. This calculator is not intended for use during pregnancy. Your maternity healthcare team can provide appropriate guidance.
Is this BMI Calculator suitable for children?
No. Children and teenagers require age- and sex-specific BMI assessment tools.
Is the BMI Calculator free?
Yes. Calculator Central’s BMI Calculator is free to use, with no registration required.
